Chef De Piece (France)

This is a chef de piece. It was company: Soehnee L'Aine et Cie. It is dated 1790–99 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is cotton and its technique is block-printed on plain weave with blocks for three reds, two purples, black, mustard, blue and yellow. It is a part of the Textiles department.

This object was donated by Cora Ginsburg. It is credited Gift of Cora Ginsburg.

Its dimensions are

Warp: 24 cm (9 1/2 in.). Weft: 87 cm. (34 1/4 in.) Both selvedges present. Pattern: Not present.

It is inscribed

Printed on front: "Manufre de Toiles Peintes de Soehnee L'aine et C a Munster Depmt du Haut Rhin" in black. And; "MSA" within box in black, "CHK" within oval in red, "S, K(or H)eckir"within box in purple, "AMK" within box in purple, "Casses 3" in black, "53 over 170" within box, printed twice. No stamps on back of fabric.
