Sidewall (France)

This is a sidewall. It is dated ca. 1860 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is block printed on continuous paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

The use of framing to draw attention to certain elements of a design was a popular convention of the mid-nineteenth century. This simple frame, wrapped with floral bouquets and ribbons, is delicately suspended from a vase with flowers, while birds fly amidst foliate swags. The frame shares with the viewer a special unknown landscape where a lone thistle grows beside a stream. Printed in a monochrome green colorway with gold highlights, the mood is serene and tranquil.

It is credited Museum purchase from the Smithsonian Institution Collections Acquisition Program, General Acquisitions Endowment, Eleanor G. Hewitt, and Pauline Cooper Noyes Funds.
