Doily, Flora's Retinue: Poppy

This is a Doily. It was designed by Walter Crane and produced by John Wilson & Sons. It is dated ca. 1891 and we acquired it in 1994. Its medium is linen warp, silk weft and its technique is 4&1 satin damask. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Like many of the Pre-Raphaelites he admired, Walter Crane favored mythological subjects. Flora, the goddess of flowers, whose retinue is featured here, had been depicted in botanical and horticultural books since the 16th century. By the 19th century, a personified Flora no longer appeared in scientific texts, yet the goddess and her myths continued as favorite subjects for Victorian artists and designers.

It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund and through gift of Mrs. Edward Stern.

This small, square doily, with long fringes on all sides, has an ivory linen warp (top and bottom fringe) and a gray-green silk weft (left and right fringe). A reclined figure sitting in a bed of leaves dressed as a daisy with long-stemmed daisies surrounding , and the word DAISY in the upper right corner, all appearing in ivory on a gray-green ground. Along the edge of the doily is a frame made of repeated curved leaves and dots.

This small square doily has long fringes on all sides, with an ivory linen warp (fringe top and bottom) and a bright pink silk weft (fringe to the left and right). A figure in a pink dress and sitting on a large pink stem, with the word PINK in the upper left corner, all appearing in ivory on a pink ground. Flowers and stems surround her in the background, with a small repeated-triangle frame on along the edge of the doily.

This small square doily has long fringes on all sides, with an ivory linen warp (fringe top and bottom) and bronze-colored silk weft (fringe to the left and right). A figure in a dress made of bluebells is framed by bluebells, with the word Bluebell in the upper left, on a bronze-colored background. Flowers and stems surround her with a small, three-petal pattern frame on along the edge of the doily.
