Poster, Ro.Go.Pa.G.

This is a Poster. It is dated 1963 and we acquired it in 2010. Its medium is offset lithograph on wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

A prolific graphic designer, Karel Vaca designed over 250 posters in roughly thirty years. Vaca was a painter as well as an illustrator, and appropriates Rogier van der Weyden’s painting “The Descent from the Cross (1435)” as the basis for his collage. Vaca subverts the original intention of the painting by layering it with colored cutouts of food. Not meant to only advertise the film, Vaca’s poster is a commentary on censorship in post-war Eastern Europe.

This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Post-Cubist Still Life.

This object was donated by Marc Benda. It is credited Gift of Sara and Marc Benda.

Its dimensions are

82 × 58.6 cm (32 5/16 × 23 1/16 in.)
