Poster, Jean Prouvé: Architekt und Konstrukteur

This is a Poster. It is dated 1978 and we acquired it in 2010. Its medium is offset lithograph on wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

This poster was designed by Odermatt on the occasion of an exhibition of the French architect Jean Prouvé’s work at the Museum für Gestaltung (Museum of Applied Arts) in Zürich in 1978. Prouvé was among the most well-known architects working in mid-twentieth century France. The son of Victor Prouvé, a founder of l’Ecole de Nancy—an Art Nouveau artist collective—the younger Prouvé sought to link art and industry throughout the course of his career. Odermatt’s poster design is therefore evidence of the architect’s longstanding fascination with industrial aesthetics. Using a photograph of Prouvé’s design for the Rotterdam Medical School of Erasmus University, Odermatt renders the structure in a blue halftone. The minimal color palette amplifies and intensifies the monumental character of the architect’s angular design, but also offers a backdrop for the simple sans serif typographic forms, which are embedded directly into the architectural scheme.

This object was featured in our Object of the Week series in a post titled Nothing to Prouvé.
