Vase Vase

This is a vase. It was decorated by Joseph Bailey Sr. and manufactured by Rookwood Pottery. It is dated 1899 and we acquired it in 1984. Its medium is earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This object was donated by William Goodman and Marcia Goodman. It is credited Gift of Marcia and William Goodman.

Its dimensions are

H x diam.: 13.4 x 16.5 cm (5 1/4 x 6 1/2 in.)

It has the following markings

Underside of vase: [1] “RP”, impressed with 8 flames (manufacturer’s and date mark; 1894) [2] “750C”, impressed, “750” (shape number; 1894-), “C” (size mark)* [3] “(279)”, impressed, “()” (trial marks of Joseph Bailey, Sr.), “279” (unknown mark)** *The Shape Record Book notes that number 750 was cast from a Japanese vase brought to the United States by Kataro Shirayamadani. It was first made in July, 1894. **The facing crescents are identified as trial marks used by Joseph Bailey, Sr., super intendent of Rookwood, who carried out most of the glaze experiments.
