Underside of vase: [1] “RP”, impressed with 8 flames (manufacturer’s and date mark; 1894) [2] “750C”, impressed, “750” (shape number; 1894-), “C” (size mark)* [3] “(279)”, impressed, “()” (trial marks of Joseph Bailey, Sr.), “279” (unknown mark)** *The Shape Record Book notes that number 750 was cast from a Japanese vase brought to the United States by Kataro Shirayamadani. It was first made in July, 1894. **The facing crescents are identified as trial marks used by Joseph Bailey, Sr., super intendent of Rookwood, who carried out most of the glaze experiments.
