Sidewall (France)

This is a sidewall. It was produced by Jean-Baptiste Réveillon. It is dated 1788 and we acquired it in 1985. Its medium is block printed, hand painted, gilded on handmade paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

This very high-end production was created by Jean-Baptiste Reveillon, one of the premier manufacturer’s in Paris. This full, unused roll of paper is woodblock printed, hand painted and contains applied gold leaf. It still retains the original end paper bearing the Manufacture Royale stamp. The design contains four repeats, each bearing different classical figures balanced on a floral plateau rising out of the floral bouquet. Arabesque designs were inspired by the excavations at the recently discovered ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Réveillon’s arabesques consisted of three types: large panels of a single arabesque design, narrow arabesques used to frame the larger panels, and repeating arabesque patterns printed in either a single or double-column format, with the single-column used here.

It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
