Sidewall (USA)

This is a sidewall. It is dated 1835–50 and we acquired it in 1985. Its medium is block printed on machine-made paper. It is a part of the Wallcoverings department.

Innovations in transportation and mobility have been a common theme on wallpaper. Lush Rococo ornamentation contains two landscape scenes: an early steam locomotive alternates with a tall ship. The train appears to be a model designed by the Robert Stephenson Co. in England, 1835, whose trains were the first used successfully for the commercial rail transport of passengers and goods in Europe.

This object was donated by Wiscasset Public Library. It is credited Gift of Wiscasset Public Library.

Its dimensions are

Overall: a,d) 63 x 48.5cm (24 13/16 x 19 1/8in.)
