Large sample of silk-screen printed cotton velvet with a design of concentric squares in eight gradated shades of turquoise. The concentric pattern sections out the sample in an overall 3x3 formation of nine distinctly large squares. Beginning at the top left, every other large square has within it eight gradations that start with an outter dark turquoise and grow to light; the remaining four squares between this pattern have an opposite formation that has an outter light turquoise that gradates to dark. There is an irregular white border around the sample.

Sample, Decor I Series, Square, 1969

This is a Sample. It was designed by Verner Panton and manufactured by Mira-X International Furnishings, Inc.. It is dated 1969 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is cotton and its technique is screen printed on supplementary warp pile (velvet). It is a part of the Textiles department.

Verner Panton believed that color played a greater role than form in design, but in these dynamic patterns, he plays with both. In each design, the color appears in eight degrees of saturation, from 15% to 100%; the graduated depth of color contributes to a sensation of three-dimensional depth.

It is credited Museum purchase from the Members' Acquisitions Fund of Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.
