Textile, Snowflakes

This is a Textile. It was designed by Charlotte Joan Sternberg and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated Early to mid 1950s and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Charlotte Sternberg was an egg tempera painter best known for her snow scenes set in historical New England, many of which appeared on holiday cards. This textile design, Snowflakes, was a natural continuation of her favorite theme, giving winter enthusiasts an excuse to celebrate Christmas in July.
Snowflakes features a flurry of white flakes across a golden yellow ground, shaded to suggest paper cut-outs in the shape of pine trees.
Sportswear designer Carolyn Schnurer used the design to create a dress and a bathing suit and jacket set; the pieces appeared in the January 1953 issue of Harper’s Bazaar. (1)
This textile in a gray colorway is currently in the museum’s collection (1994-38-2).
