Textile, American Splendor

This is a Textile. It was produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1952 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

The Italian-born artist Luigi Lucioni found great success in the U.S., where his still life and rural Americana paintings garnered early attention. The Metropolitan Museum of Art purchased a painting by Lucioni when he was just 30 years old.
In 1946, Lucioni painted a pastoral scene of Route 7 in New England that appeared in a Maxwell House advertisement. Reproductions of the painting were sold by Associated American Artists as an etching and a gelatone print. In 1952, Lucioni designed the related American Splendor textile as part of the Pioneer Pathways collection released by Riverdale Fabrics. (1)
In the March 9, 1952 New York Times, Macy’s advertised an upcoming meet-and-greet with Lucioni in tandem with the manager of its decorating department. American Splendor was to cost $2.24 per yard.
This design is part of the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art’s traveling exhibition, “Art for Every Home: Associated American Artists, 1934-2000.”
