Textile, Trade Winds

This is a Textile. It was designed by John Hull and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1952 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Trade Winds is John Hull’s nautical-themed design for Associated American Artists. This early textile, dated 1952, appeared as part of the Chart Your Course series released by Riverdale Fabrics. Its multicolored motifs, presented on a speckled brown ground, include ships, flags, fearsome fish, compass stars, and faraway shorelines. A blustery personification of wind stirs up the waves by blowing gusts of air.

Betty Pepis singled out this design in the February 27, 1953 edition of The New York Times: “’Trade Winds’ by John Hull draws its inspiration from the boats and charts Columbus used to reach America.”

This textile is presented for consideration in two colorways; the other version (5826.27.2016) has an orange ground.

There are currently two examples of Hull’s work in the museum’s collection: a textile entitled Gay Façade (1994-38-8) and a wallcovering entitled Speckled Diamond (1954-21-9).
