Textile, Summer Symphony

This is a Textile. It was designed by Robert Schneeberg and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1952 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Robert Schneeberg, a painter who spent his career at Hallmark Cards, considered his gardens his other art form. His green thumb and his knack for popular illustrations are both evident in his infectious Summer Symphony. The design includes a spread of flowers and ferns, some in baskets and some drifting freely, in shades of green, pink, red, and blue.
Summer Symphony was featured in the February 1953 issue of Woman’s Home Companion, alongside Aaron Bohrod’s Pagan Magic. (1) The juxtaposition of the two living rooms highlighted the versatility of the Signature Fabrics collection.
The museum currently holds one example of Schneeberg’s work, a wallcovering called Floral Basket (1954-21-7).
