Textile, Days of Yore

This is a Textile. It was designed by Stephen Rex and produced by Associated American Artists. It is dated 1954 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton and its technique is printed. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Stephen Rex’s Days of Yore has a distinctly science-fiction feel. Its dreamlike imagery includes shields, castles, and unnerving trees that resemble outstretched hands. In Rex’s vision, alien and Medieval at the same time, bright pastel shapes are scattered across a dotted white ground. This design, which was also available on a black ground, is reflective of the midcentury break from traditional textile design.

This object was donated by American Textile History Museum. It is credited American Textile History Museum Collection, gift of Karen Herbaugh.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 96.5 × 88.9 cm (38 × 35 in.)
