Textile, Taliesin Line: Design 102

This is a Textile. It was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and manufactured by F. Schumacher & Co.. It is dated 1955 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is cotton, viscose rayon and its technique is printed on plain weave. It is a part of the Textiles department.

Although most of his home furnishings were designed for specific interiors, Frank Lloyd Wright created several lines of products for the market, among them the Taliesin Ensemble collection of furniture, produced by Heritage-Henredon, and the Taliesin Line of wall coverings and textiles, produced by F. Schumacher and Company. The collection included six printed fabrics, seven woven fabrics, and four wallpapers.
Many of the textile designs reference Wright’s stained glass panels, which he referred to as ‘light screens,’ and used extensively as skylights, tabletops, and other interior features in his architectural designs. This design resembles a skylight designed for the Willits House, built in 1901 in Glencoe, Illinois, among the first of Wright’s Prairie houses. Intended for use as draperies, these designs provided a moderately-price alternative to Wright’s fully-customized interiors.
Another example of this design, in a different colorway, is in the museum's collection.
