This is a square image of a detail within larger batik. It is a close-up detail from the bottom right, middle but next to corner of a large, rectangular, horizontal mural, The World of Radio, created in multiple warm colors. The muted earth tones encapsulate a stylized, semi-realistic nearly monochrome scene of a memorial service made of geometric shapes and highly detailed forms paired with random decorative elements. The service itself is framed in circle and depicts First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt placing a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. A guard looks on from the side of the Tomb, and behind her, President Franklin D. Roosevelt stands onlooking with two flanking guards. There is a modest crowd in the background, and a long banner among tree branches that reads [Arlington]. The circle is surrounded by other mural decoration patterns and scenes: the triangular frame of the batik along the bottom, ruffles and textile patterns of two giant statue's dresses to the left and top right, and frame edges of other individual scenes to the top left and bottom right. These other scenes and statue elements are all on different scales and planes, with their own unique patterns and vignettes. Despite these differences, they are all unified by the subdued earthen color and semi-realistic but stylized renderings.

Mural Detail, The World of Radio, 1934

This is a Mural detail. It was made for Jessica Dragonette. It is dated 1934. Its medium is cotton and its technique is wax resist dyeing (batik) on plain weave.

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt places a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, with President Roosevelt looking on. Jessica Dragonette sang at the Armistice Day ceremonies with the Roosevelts each year from 1933 to 1936. The ceremonies were broadcast live nationwide over the NBC radio network.

It is credited Gift of Nicholas Meredith Turner in memory of Jessica Dragonette.
