Table Mat, 2017, textile designed 2012
This is a Table mat. It was designed by Luisa Cevese and manufactured by Luisa Cevese Riedizioni. It is dated 2017, textile designed 2012 and we acquired it in 2017. Its medium is gold-leafed washi paper, polyurethane and its technique is slit paper, embedded in polyurethane. It is a part of the Textiles department.
In 2012, Cevese began working with Hosoo, a 328-year-old Kyoto-based weaver of nishijin-ori, or brocaded silks traditionally used for kimono. Those fabrics’ distinctive metallic effects are created using strips of gilded washi paper in the weft. Gold, silver or platinum leaf are applied by hand to the washi by a highly skilled craftsman. Sometimes, during the process of slitting the paper into strips narrow enough for weaving, the leaf is damaged. These “seconds” are sent to Cevese, who embeds them in polyurethane to create tabletop accessories.
