A six piece silver tea set of repeating relief design of butterflies, flowers, leaves and berries. The standing tea pot stands center back and has a designed overhead handle with an open space for a warmer burner. Two other tea pots on the left and right have side handles, while the left is short and squat and a short spout and the right is taller with a larger spout. In the front are three containers, two open. On the left is a milk container, open with a small spout and handle and on the right a closed lid sugar container with handles on both sides. The front open center piece has no lid and a noticeable gold plated interior.

Tea Set, 1888

This is a tea set. It was manufactured by Dominick and Haff, New York and retailed by Bailey, Banks and Biddle. It is dated 1888 and we acquired it in 1980. Its medium is cast, chased, repoussé silver, ivory. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Dominick and Haff, whose output and originality competed with Tiffany & Co. and Gorham in its day, also embraced Japanese aesthetics. A dense pattern of vines, leaves, berries, and butterflies in high relief envelops this tea service. Each piece of the set takes the basic form of a cube which is a geometry drawn from Japanese examples.

This object was donated by Mrs. Norris W. Harkness. It is credited Gift of Mrs. Norris W. Harkness.

Silver tea kettle with four point base and large handle. Pointy leaves decorate the piece throughout, including small patches at each corner of the base, the point when the kettle meets the base up to its center, on the pouring hole, and at the bottom of the handle. The lid to the kettle appears to be a flower that is still a bud.
