A thin rectangular textile of a gradient brown color with a geometric pattern of small vibrantly-colored rectangles. Different muted tones of grey and brown comprise the border and the majority of the piece, giving the textile a gradient-like effect. Inside the border a series of vibrant blue, purple, coral, orange, and yellow rectangles repeat after every other brown-hued rectangle. Each vibrant color family comprises 2-3 consectuive rows and columns of their respective rectangles amongst the brown-hued rectangles.

Textile, Apollo, 1995

This is a Textile. It was created by Richard Landis. It is dated 1995 and we acquired it in 2018. Its medium is mercerized cotton double weave.

“Window blocks” is a traditional double cloth pattern, but Landis pushes its design capabilities by developing complex color systems in both the windows and frame. With a nod to Josef Albers’s Homage to the Square paintings, he lines each side of each window with a contrasting color, shifting our perception of the colors within.

Strung from a wood plank, a vertical golden yellow and blue tarten fabric hangs. Colorful squares are woven uniformly throughout in red, yellow, and blue tones.

A tan, vertically-rectangular textile with a pattern of differently-sized and differently-colored small rectangles. The rectangles repeat in hues of orange, red, purple, and blue. The different widths of the rectangles repeat in groups of three in rows across the textile, with three identical smaller-width rectangles positioned next to three larger-width rectangles, and so on - this repeats across the whole of the textile on top of the overall tan color of the background.
