Necklace

This is a necklace. It was designed by Lucy Sarneel. It is dated 2006. Its medium is antique textile, rubber, onyx, nylon, zinc. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Sarneel created this necklace on the theme of bereavement, incorporating a vintage textile worn in the costume tradition of the Dutch village of Marken, near Amsterdam. For Sarneel, the onyx beads and zinc “tears” also refer to mourning and grief.

It is credited Promised gift to the Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
