Signature Piece Necklace, 2005

This is a necklace. It was designed by Kiff Slemmons. It is dated 2005 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is mass-produced metal-rimmed key tags, ink. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Slemmons’s humor shines in this necklace, in which she combined manufactured key tags with 100 images of her fingerprints. The piece is her tongue-in-cheek way to sign her work, something she does not usually do. Another layer of meaning is associated with the hand—the only hand-made parts are the fingerprints and Slemmons’s assembly of the tags into a necklace.

This object was donated by Susan Lewin. It is credited The Susan Grant Lewin Collection, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
