Drawing, Designs for Roofs Brooch
This is a Drawing. It was designed by Annamaria Zanella. It is dated 2002 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is pen and black ink, brush and watercolor, graphite on cream wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.
These three drawings by Annamaria Zanella for the Roofs brooch depict an important step in the jewelry designer’s creative process. The various sketches of open-square geometric designs demonstrate her exploration of color, form, and surface treatment for the brooch. Details of the interlocking pyramidal segments demonstrate her attention to the points at which the design breaks from the traditional square form. Zanella’s color palette and overlapping details in these designs evoke the pattern of sunlight and shadows on the ceramic roofs of traditional Italian buildings.
