HIs open right hand is resting comfortably on his right leg while his left hand is closed in a fist resting on his left left. The background is painted in blacks and browns in a painterly style. The painting is encased by a giltwood frame with egg-and-dart, vegetal, and rocaille decoration.

Portrait of Myron Herrick, ca. 1922

It was painted by Phillip A. de László. It is dated ca. 1922. Its medium is oil on canvas.

Former Ohio governor Myron T. Herrick, United States ambassador to France from 1912 to 1914 and again from 1921 to 1929, vigorously advocated for US participation in the Paris exposition. He was instrumental in persuading President Hoover to establish a commission of important figures in the design world to visit the fair and report on the exhibits. The commission’s report resulted in the 1926 exhibition of selections from the fair that traveled to American museums.

Portrait of Jazz age composer George Gershwin by artist William Auerbach-Levy. Gershwin is seated at the piano wearing a light blue bathrobe with purple, yellow, pink and red stripes. His fingers are on the piano as if playing but the keys are not delineated, there are only black and white bars where the keys should be. There is a small, squat green glass bottle on the right hand side of the piano and a short lamp with an oversized pale shade with light blue tassels on the left. Gershwin is pictured with either a five o’clock shadow or an early morning pre-shave growth of beard.

A mixed media portrait of a standing woman, from about the waist up. The woman’s body faces to our right, with her head turned to look at us in a three-quarter view. Her light skin has a yellowish tinge. She has short waved light brown hair parted on the side and curled over her ears. She regards us with a cool expression: her thin eyebrows are arched over heavy-lidded pale blue eyes and her dark-red lips are set in a thin line. She wears a double strand of golden brown pearls and an elegant, draping dress or shawl in shades of deep blue and gold, patterned with a mix of geometric designs: waves, starburst flowers, speckles, and thin lines. The shawl is knotted around her shoulders; her right arm appears to be completely concealed by the garment. The background is mosaic-like, filled with crackled ivory-colored rectangles, shaded with warm brown dots around the edges of the painting. The upper right corner is brightest, shading into the darkest lower left corner, such that the woman’s face is highlighted.
