This is a vase.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Dallas Museum of Art as part of The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s.

It is dated ca. 1925–30. Its medium is cased glass.

Artisans in the workshops of Daum Frères had focused on naturalistic subject matter starting in the art nouveau period. During the 1920s, wild animals were popular motifs throughout the decorative arts, as evidenced by the gazelles seen on this vase.

It is credited Lent by Dallas Museum of Art, The Patsy Lacy Griffith Collection, bequest of Patsy Lacy Griffith, 2001.148.

Cylindrical, slightly tapering, broad vase with a deep, cut and faceted glass surface. The surface carving forms a pattern of continuous stylized spiny curves that is both geometric and reminiscent of the vegetal world. These swirls form the outermost surface, and are highlighted in smooth and shiny black enamel. Between the swirls, the grooves in the surface are made of clear, cut and etched glass that appears like a blurred background, giving the illusion of moving water, or of ice. This sculptural vase conveys all at once ideas of organic growth forms, water, and motion.
