The bowls are both in a blue tonal color with decorative motifs on their surface. Its surface is in dark blue with images made by scratches revealing a lighter blue color - the sgraffito technique. The left bowl has a “Cocktails and Cigarettes” theme with images that include glasses, bottles, bubbles, zigzags, and various shapes. The right bowl’s design called “The New Yorker (Jazz)” has a more abstract rendition of city nightlife with buildings, stars, and various shapes. The inner portions of the bowls also have images of stars, circles, and wavy lines on their surface.

This is a punch bowl. It was made by Cowan Pottery Studio. It is dated 1931. Its medium is glazed earthenware with engobe, sgraffito.

Two designs by Cleveland industrial designer Viktor Schreckengost from around 1930 for Cowan Pottery, the "Cocktails and Cigarettes" (left) and "The New Yorker (Jazz)" punch bowls, reflect the Jazz Age obsession for nightlife and the urban experience. While “The New Yorker” was made in a limited edition, this is the only known example of “Cocktails and Cigarettes,” a related nightclub theme.

It is credited Lent by The Cleveland Museum of Art, Gift of Elizabeth Mather McMillan, 2000.128.

A narrow, vertically rectangular salmon-colored box, which sits open. The box has 'Cartier' engraved in gold lettering in the center of the underside of the box-top. Inside the box is a black, tubular cigarette holder. The cigarette holder has a silver trim on one tip, as well as about 3/4 of the way to the left of the holder.

Six matching tabletop sets. Each set is on a translucent rectilinear tray with coral balls for feet. Gold studs drilled into the tray hold the coral in place. The corners of the tray are rounded and on each tray are two upright rectangular nephrite slabs into which four holes have been drilled. Each of four cigarettes fits into the holes. The nephrite is held in place near the bottom with a long smooth bolt that has a large head. Each slab has a thin gold band near the top that goes around it. Just below the band is a small tube-set cabochon ruby. There is space behind the slab for a place card to go.

A wide-mouthed slightly bulbous circular bowl, tapering to a molded circular foot. The exterior of the bowl is decorated with a composition of stylized geometric architecture, art-deco advertising signs, cocktail glasses, and musical instruments in black, with a royal blue, transparent glaze over the whole surface. A small part of the interior is shown, which is decorated with a continuous band of musical staff and notations in royal blue over a black ground.
