This monochrome black chair is made of repeated, geometric cut outs and abstract 3-D shapes. The shapes are ovular with a curved star in the middle, with the star varying in thickness and gradation in the middle. The geometric shapes and material are tightly molded together in various overlapping sequences, making the repeated elements form one continuous chair shape. The chair sits on the floor as one unit without legs.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Joris Laarman as part of Joris Laarman Lab: Design in the Digital Age.

It is dated 2014. Its medium is thermoplastic polyurethane (tpu).

The Soft Gradient Chair was 3D printed in thermoplastic polyurethane, a material that can be either hard or soft, depending on how dense or porous the cell structure is. As a result, a single material and a single production technique can realize various degrees of firmness, strength, softness, and comfort in a single chair.
