This is a Cigarette Case. It is dated 1931. Its medium is platinum, baguette-cut diamond clasp.

Luxurious cigarette cases were ideal gifts as more and more people took to smoking in public. Cartier made this platinum example in 1931, engraved with the signatures of twenty-one friends of photographer Baron Adolf de Meyer, including Coco Chanel, Peggy Guggenheim, Elsie de Wolfe, and Daisy Fellowes, presumably as a gift for a now-forgotten moment.

It is credited Lent by Cartier Collection, Inv. CC 50 A31.
