This is a Booklet cover. It was designed by Herbert Bayer and made for (as the client) General Electric Company. It is dated 1942 and we acquired it in 2016. Its medium is offset lithograph on thick white paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

The striking rendering of a lightbulb is shown upside down with the gold cap at the top. The stylized, angular filament of the bulb, labeled [ORION], features an outline of the letter 'S'. Echoing the shape of the letter in the bulb, a luminous blue 'S' hovers in the background, the bottom of which disappears behind an open box of Orion brand light bulbs. Below the white flap, the box is blue with orange and white accents. A lightbulb is perched atop the brand name [ORION] in vivid orange and as well, a series of jagged light beams exuding outward in Art Deco style. As well, the image draws on Plakatstil (German for 'poster style'), also known as Sachplakat, an early style of poster art that originated in the 1900s. The common characteristics of this style are bold eye-catching lettering with flat colors. Bottlik’s used compact and perfect forms, decorative ornaments and interesting lighting effects. Also a brilliant typographer, Bottlik used metal-like decorative letters fit perfectly for Orion, in the poster. At the top left corner is the text [BRUCHSTEINER ÉS FIA | BUDAPEST.], representing the publisher Bruchsteiner and son, in off-white.
