Poster, Design Ignites Change

This is a Poster. It was designed by Marian Bantjes and made for (as the client) The Academy of Educational Development. It is dated 2008 and we acquired it in 2013. Its medium is laser cut wove paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

Design Ignites Change was created by Marian Bantjes for the Academy of Educational Development, a not-for-profit organization based in Washington D.C. that promotes the use of design in educational development. This poster is especially compelling because of its hand-crafted appearance. In contrast to normal laser cutting procedure, the text was cut from the front of the sheet so that the burn marks around the letters show in the final work.
At the time of proposed acquisition, the museum holds several works by Bantjes in its collection, dating from 2005 to 2007. Bantjes is a significant designer and this poster would help extend the museum’s documentation of her creative production.

A hand-held brisé ivory lace fan embroidered with intricate floral motifs. The fan's ivory sticks are carved with the same intricate floral motif within the lace. Within the lace, a monogram in an oval medallion at the center is flanked by diagonally-positioned pagodas on either side. Surrounding the oval medallion is an overall design of small flowering vine and birds, with a lace-like effect achieved by the carving of fine vertical lines to create a sheer ground for the solid motifs.

White and tan dress. Laser-cut, creating a sense of hyper-precision in shapes and curves. Pattern looks lace-like, with overlapping circles throughout. Dress consists of two primary parts; the main part, which cuts off at shoulders and extends to thigh area, and shoulder pads. Main part has two curved pieces, extending outward, exposing a third center section. All sections have a lace-like quality. Shoulder pads are divided in two section; top part has lace-like quality, bottom part has more of a wicker-seat pattern.
