Poster, Respirando

This is a Poster. It was designed by Rebeca Méndez. It is dated 1999 and we acquired it in 2018. Its medium is offset lithograph on paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

The XPoster (Respirando) was created for the World Expo 2000 in the city of Hannover, Germany. Twelve designers (Méndez representing Mexico) were asked to fly to the city and to design a poster based on their brief visit. Against the background of the coming millennium, Méndez’s response was “to remain open to change”and to “keep on breathing.” Her poster is a loose collage of a two images of her husband’s chest with the word “Respirando” in between, the letters imitating a chest expanding and collapsing and the “O” of expo forming part of the year 2000 while also referring to the symbol for oxygen. She also includes images of the lungs and rib-cage over a map of the city.

This object was donated by Rebeca Méndez. It is credited Gift of Rebeca Méndez.

Its dimensions are
