Textile, Six X Four II, 2009

This is a Textile. It was created by James Bassler. It is dated 2009 and we acquired it in 2018. Its medium is hemp, cochineal-dyed alpaca, natural brown cotton, natural alpaca. It is a part of the department.

Bassler’s captivation with historic textiles and weaving techniques are made manifest in Six X Four II, a piece influenced by the indigenous textile traditions of Pre-Hispanic Peru. Like his Andean predecessors, he creates stepped motifs of pure color using a complex and arduous discontinuous warp and weft weaving process only found in Peru. Bassler’s reverence for native Andean materials is unmistakable in his embrace of cochineal-dyed fibers, where the insect can be found reproducing without human assistance or with his use of unprocessed alpaca and cotton yarns, which together help to produce the textile’s soft palette of hues.

It is credited Museum purchase from General Acquisitions Endowment Fund and through gift of Elena Phipps.

Its dimensions are

H x W: 116.8 × 123.2 cm (46 × 48 1/2 in.)
