All imagery is rendered in one-point perspective to show the illusion of depth. Large trees taller than the buildings hover over Fifth Avenue from the west side of Fifth Avenue also in grayscale. A bus shelter on the west side protects riders from extreme weather as well as informing them of the status of bus locations in real-time using a computerized map and analog clock. Pedestrian sidewalk traffic and bike lane traffic representing mobility on the west side of Fifth Avenue as well as the unlined street are rendered in tints, tones and shades of brown. Pedestrian, bus and car traffic representing mobility in the center and on the east side of Fifth Avenue are rendered in tints, tones and shades of orange, white and black using contour lines for a flattened effect of imagery. The use of different colors and effects divide the image into existing urban planning and future options for mobility. Colors are an engaging contrast to grayscale.

Sounds Of The Future City, 2018

This is a Sounds of the Future City. It was designed by James Conway, Anthony Cortez, Terence Caulkins, Willem Boning, Arup, Rachel Abrams, Casey Eckersley, James Francisco, Léonard Roussel, Adam Wolffbrandt, Chris Pollock, Raj Patel, Kelsey Habla and Sean O'Neill and made for (as the client) Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. It is dated 2018. Its medium is sound installation. It is a part of the department.

This immersive 3D sound experience presents three scenarios that prototype how cities might sound in the future as new technologies arrive in public spaces. How might journey-specific digital information enhance passengers’ experiences of transit? Will cities become quieter and calmer as street design, informed by sensor data, allows for greener spaces? Is the future of electric vehicles (EVs) necessarily a quiet one?

Pedestrians, cyclists, and a child on a scooter are featured in the scene along with guests seated at round bistro tables on each side of the promenade. A store can be see on the far left behind the tree, and short bushes with hints of orange, pink, and purple line the promenade as it continues into the distance.
