MOD, Adaptive Parking Garage

This is a MOD, Adaptive Parking Garage. It was designed by Joel Spearman, Jordan Kessler, Gensler, Emily Columbus, Benjamin Garcia, Molli Worb, Jaechang Ko and Eva Xu. It is dated 2016. It is a part of the department.

In the U.S., cars sit idle and parked 95% of the time. Circulating fleets of autonomous vehicles (AVs) will make parking garages obsolete. Gensler’s concept repurposes a parking garage as a community space by incorporating a mix of pre-fabricated modules
for private and public uses. The concept encourages building current parking structures with flat floors and higher floor-to-floor heights, which will allow for future adaptation.

BEFORE section of the model displays a traditional parking structure with staggered flat floor plates. AFTER model section demonstrates how the parking structure could be redeveloped for workspace, retail, and permanent supportive housing using cost-effective, pre-fabricated modules.

Pedestrians, cyclists, and a child on a scooter are featured in the scene along with guests seated at round bistro tables on each side of the promenade. A store can be see on the far left behind the tree, and short bushes with hints of orange, pink, and purple line the promenade as it continues into the distance.

A digital print of a highly colorful model using various materials against a black ground. The model is shaped like a futuristic “starship” with bright pink pliable gridded materials illuminated by bright white light emanating from two built structures shaped like domes with open centers. Attached is a blue purple dome with a wide opening and a gridded cylindrical red form within. On the bottom left is a design made from a small scale grid and solid black spaces in curved shapes with a hockey puck shaped object in the center.

A two dimensional colorful design site plan using three dimensional imagery for a citywide equitable development mobility proposal. The site plan is arranged in a nine block rectangular section with homes and tree-lined streets embracing four service design concepts through color and imagery; education in yellow, student outcome in pink, care exchange in green and health data collection in blue. Mobile pods are traveling to neighborhoods to share services to all communities in the city. Information is printed outside the site plan using label shaped speech bubbles, cross sections and phone apps shown in cell phones to clarify concepts.

A modular system of hexagonal solar panels installed five columns by six rows on a wide wet sidewalk. The panels are dark gray and black, flush with the ground and use light configuration in the first, third and fifth row to give information to drivers. It was nighttime when this photograph was taken showing lights reflected in puddles of water and the bottom of young narrow tree trunks.

Storage system made up of eight sections. The top and bottom sections are covered with sliding panels of plywood. The upper middle section is open but the back has two prominent features. On the left side there are angled braces while the right side has a perforated aluminum panel. The lower middle section has three drawers made of black lacquered wood with metal handles while the right is unoccupied.
