A visitor stands in front of an interactive screen. The screen, vertical in orientation, is centered in the image and is surrounded by thin pillar-like objects creating a non-uniform striped background. The screen is displaying a composite image of the viewer by way of a live projection via a camera. The camera is subtly positioned beside the vertical screen on its left. Instead of a normal projection, the image displayed is distorted by super-imposing random images of eyes, nose, and lips of other subjects. This creates a caricature rendition of the visitor being captured. The visitor, standing in front of the screen to the right of the image, is slightly out of focus, drawing the viewer’s focus towards the interactive screen displaying the unique facial rendition.

Interactive Installation, Expression Mirror

This is a Interactive installation. It was designed by Zachary Lieberman. Its medium is computer, camera, monitor, electronic components, and software (openframeworks (c++), python, keras). It is a part of the department.

In the future, people will control computers with their faces, eyes, and even their minds. Expression Mirror, created by Zachary Lieberman, invites you to use your face to interact with the computer, camera, and screen. Custom software seeks matches with the facial expressions of other visions, combining faces to generate unique social portraits. Dynamic white lines create an abstract, graphic interpretation of emotional states.

Lieberman is one of the makers of openFrameworks—a tool for creative coding—and he is a founder of the School of Poetic Computation in New York City. EyeWriter, an eye-tracking interface designed for people with paralysis, won Design of the Year (Interactive) 2010 from the London Design Museum.
