Drawing, Still Life

This is a Drawing. It was created by E. McKnight Kauffer. It is dated 1918. Its medium is watercolor. It is a part of the department.

A breakthrough moment in Kauffer’s career was a solo exhibition of his watercolors in 1917. Roger Fry organized the show, which included Suspension Bridge. As Fry described in his accompanying catalog essay, Kauffer had begun fracturing planes and abstracting pictorial elements, as well as drawing attention to the flatness of the paper. These artistic choices were a direct influence of the style of cubism.

Cubism

Cubism was a European art movement that began in 1907. Cubist artists combined abstraction with an attempt to represent multiple planes simultaneously, thereby representing several points of view at the same time.

A stylized vertical black and white print of tall tightly arranged sunflowers in curved white cylindrical vase, centered in the upper right with large negative space in lower portion of paper. Light source seems to come from upper right side like intense sunlight casting solid white beams contrasting with the cross-hatched shadows. The flower arrangement, appearing top heavy, is predominately solid black with white detail work to delineate lines in the leaves and stems, shape of petals, seed texture of the flowers' centers. The right edge has a thin portion of a self with three small tear-drop or leaf-shaped figurines.

Stylized drawing of steam boat facing away from the viewer, with the stern in the foreground on the lower right side, foreshortened diagonally to the left. The composition is heavily shaded with bold thick lines appearing dark as if it is nighttime or back weather. A plume of steam rises out of the singular smokestack and the silhouette of the top half of an individual wearing a hat is in the bow. Right to the boat is a dark building or structure. Water rendered in regular scallop pattern continuing as small dashes into the background horizon line, which is topped with a bridge with two arches over the water. The image is surrounded by rectangular framing lines.
