Drawing, Six Sketches for "Vivo in Typo" Poster with Rectangle Lower Left

This is a Drawing. It was designed by Philippe Apeloig. It is dated 2008 and we acquired it in 2014. Its medium is pen and black ink on white paper. It is a part of the Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design department.

In 2006 Philippe Apeloig designed a poster for an installation of his posters at Espace Topographie de l’Art in Paris, entitled Vivo in Typo. A group of nineteen preparatory drawings and prints document Apeloig’s design process for creating Vivo in Typo, documenting the evolution of this poster design. Apeloig’s compositional studies are worked out in pen and ink by hand. On one of these sheets, he also jots down his thoughts for the matrix (foundational elements) out of which the poster will be created. The matrix is composed of different punctuation marks-- dashes, semicolons, and vertical bars. The digital prints highlight moments in the designer’s computer process. Using the computer, Apeloig or a member of his studio built up layers of markings, applying different kernings or adjustments to the spacing of individual letter forms and then laid these examples one on top of another. One of these later process prints shows the letters placed on a red ground, which comes close to the appearance of the screen printed poster. In the end, Apeloig achieved a remarkable poster whose layers of superimposed markings convey the texture of a woven textile.
