Cylindric Cigarette Lighter

This is a cigarette lighter. It was designed by Dieter Rams and manufactured by Braun AG. It is dated 1968 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is aluminum, molded plastic. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Innovative, simple, and pleasant to touch, this table accessory embodies some of Dieter Rams’s chief design principles. The sleek, ergonomic cylinder is both a functional refillable gas butane lighter and a “small sculptural object.” Thoughtful placement of the magnetic ignition pad deferred to the wrist movement and thumb pressure of the user.

A rectangular cigarette case, with a groved yellow gold surface, whose short side edges are black enamel panels. A row of square diamonds runs along the interior border of the enamel panels with a triangular pattern in the center. A rectangular platinum clasp is found in the center of the front long side. Beside the cigarette case lies a rectangular lighter with a groved yellow gold surface, which has black enamel stips along the short sides. A row of square diamonds runs along the interior border of the enamel strips with a triangular pattern in the center. A hinge is found at top left operated by a black enamel button on the long side.
