On facing page is the same sized square with red and black ink text written in an elaborate gothic font, also framed by the same foliage pattern. The initial letter of the text is the letter 'A,' echoing the same elaborate font and foliage pattern. The red font reads, 'Chapter 1. Of Golden Walter and His Father.'

Frontispiece, The Wood Beyond the World

This is a frontispiece. It was written by William Morris and illustrated by Sir Edward Burne-Jones and published by Kelmscott Press. It is dated 1894. Its medium is handmade paper printed in red and black. It is a part of the Smithsonian Libraries department.

Written toward the end of Morris’s life, The Wood Beyond the World is a fantasy novel closely informed by medieval romances. The historical English identities and characters that Morris sought to revive were connected closely to the woods and, in particular, to oak trees. Here, oak leaves form a border around both the text and Edward Burne-Jones’s figure of a young woman bedecked in floral garlands

A length of fabric with a deep blue background and a stylized, symmetrical floral design in rich, muted colors. A rose vine in a curving diamond shape, with thorns and leaves, creates the framework of the pattern. The light green vines are accented with alternating light red and pale pink roses at the 'corners' or points of intersection. Enclosed within the vines are tulip forms, alternating in light yellow-green and pale orange, with curving, light green leaves.
