Periodical, Floral design from Bijutsukai

This is a Periodical.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Smithsonian Libraries and Archives as part of Making Design.

It is dated 1902. Its medium is periodical, woodblock print.

These abstract patterns, inspired by simple floral designs, appeared in the 1902 issue of the Japanese periodical, Bijutsukai. Each issue—comprised solely of colorful woodblock prints by well-known Japanese painters of the day—was intended to provide traditional and innovative designs for textile artists, potters, and craftsmen worldwide.

It is credited Gift of Robert W. Chanler 1931, Smithsonian Libraries NK8 S558 CHMRB Vol. 1.

This object was previously on display as a part of the exhibition Making Design.
