Tapestry, Nightless Night, from the Reveille series

This is a Tapestry.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Textile Museum as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.

It is dated 2015. Its medium is jacquard-woven mohair and rubber.

Saksi utilizes sinuous, psychedelic patterns in a series of tapestries meant to invoke memories of growing up in Kouvola, Finland. His Reveille series experiments with Jacquard weaving techniques. In Nightless Night, moths, bats, and celestial constellations serve to visualize the sleeping mind at the edge of waking up. In addition to traditional materials, Saksi uses rubber, acrylic, lurex, and phosphorescent yarn with mohair and cashmere wool to complete his tapestries.

It is credited Courtesy of Kustaa Saksi.
