Necklace, Jungle Scenery 1, from the Jungle collection

This is a necklace. It was designed by Terhi Tolvanen.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from The Rotasa Collection Trust as part of Beauty—Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial.

It is dated 2014. Its medium is heather wood, silver, faceted and painted pearls.

Individual pieces of heatherwood are linked and banded together with small strips of silver in this delicate balance of organic form and metal accents. Painted pearls are suspended from these small silver cuffs to create an element of movement within the solid forms of the heatherwood. Tolvanen returns to this contrast of control and freedom—she refers to it as a dialogue—in much of her work, managing to create jewelry that is both thought-provoking and wearable.

It is credited Courtesy of the Rotasa Collection Trust and Ornamentum Gallery.
