1A Gift Kodak Camera And Box

This is a Camera and box. It was designed by Walter Dorwin Teague and manufactured by Eastman Kodak Company. It is dated ca. 1930 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is leather-covered metal, chrome-plated and enameled metal, glass (camera); lacquered cedar, chrome-plated and enameled metal (case). It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Walter Dorwin Teague redesigned the standard black camera housing for Kodak by introducing a range of colors and patterns, most vibrant in the overlapping geometries of the Gift Kodak Camera, released for the 1930 Christmas season.

On inside of camera cover: metal plate enameled with "NO.1A GIFT KODAK / MADE IN U.S. BY EASTMAN KODAK CO. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.". On inside of film chamber: "USE KODAK FILM 116" followed by decal with image of yellow film canister and box, and list of patent numbers.
