Vase

This is a vase. It was manufactured by Coors Porcelain Company. It is dated 1930–1940 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is glazed earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This glazed earthenware vase by the Coors pottery of Colorado shows that by the 1930s, the popularity of modernism, particularly the skyscraper style, reached beyond the sophisticated up-market buyer to middle- and lower-market consumers as well. Coors introduced the vase, popularly known as the “Empire” vase, in the early 1930s, retailing for less than $1.20 during the Great Depression, and sold the model until about 1940.

This object was donated by George R. Kravis II. It is credited Gift of George R. Kravis II.

A shining silver-colored cocktail service, with gleaming, reflective surfaces. Centered on the square tray is a tall, cylindrical cocktail shaker, with a smaller cylindrical cap and vertical ridges on the body. Circling the shaker are six stemmed cups with short, cylindrical bowls, about the same size as the shaker cap; long slender stems; and flat round bases. The interiors of the cups are brushed, matte metal. The square tray is like a picture frame, with an inset area and ridged, beveled edges stepping down to the level of the table.

Modern, architectural quadruple bud vase in a glossy, jade green ceramic and composed of four box shapes in varying heights and widths, attached together in an angular fashion. The art pottery piece features a narrow raised bud opening centered at the top of each box, similar to an inkwell. The geometric shape, sharp edges, and solid coloring are reflective of the Cubist style. The vase is set against an grey-black ombre background.
