This is a plate. It is dated ca. 1923 and we acquired it in 2015. Its medium is molded and glazed earthenware. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Russian Constructivist El Lissitzky spent much of his time in Germany in the early to mid-1920s. This earthenware charger of about 1923, made in Germany likely to El Lissitzky’s designs, features strong geometrical patterns and the red and black color contrasts favored by Constructivists and
members of the De Stijl movement, to which he was closely linked.

This object was donated by George R. Kravis II. It is credited Gift of George R. Kravis II.
