1017 Coffeepot

This is a coffeepot. It was designed by Henning Koppel and manufactured by Georg Jensen Sølvsmedie. It is dated 1952. Its medium is silver, walnut. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

Koppel’s designs for hollowware, such as this coffee/tea service, changed Georg Jensen’s aesthetic during the 1950s. Koppel trained as a sculptor and designer and began working for the Jensen firm in 1945. These nature-inspired forms follow Jensen’s tradition of incorporating naturalistic motifs into the decoration and design of his wares. Koppel’s biomorphic forms were critical to the firm’s development as a leader in mid-twentieth century modernist silver and this service exemplifies Scandinavian modern design during this period.

Nickel-plated brass elongated semi-spherical teapot resting on two splayed strips of the metal, which serve as feet. There is a thick-looking slab of vertical dark wood attached to a slimmer piece of the metal, which is the handle. The spout, halfway around the teapot from the handle, is shaped like a right triangle. The lid is flat, with a horizontal slab of dark wood as a knob. The grey metal is quite tarnished. The teapot is pictured with other matching objects in the set: a cup, sugar bowl, and creamer.
