Tavola Rotonda Rossa Centerpiece

This is a centerpiece. It was designed by Ettore Sottsass. It is dated 2003. Its medium is cast pewter, murano glass. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

This elevated centerpiece bowl designed by Ettore Sottsass in conjunction with the steel manufacturer Serafino Zani aggrandizes a familiar tableware form. Produced in 2003, it provided the entrée for a larger tableware project beween Sottsass and Serafino Zani called “La cucina sapiente e la tavola contenta” (Knowledgable cuisine and the table of contentment) that would launch the following year. As the anchor at a dining table, as its name suggests, this bowl could provide a focal point for gatherings and discussions. The glass bowl is elevated on six flat pewter legs whose banded orientation suggest strapwork, referring to ornament of the medieval period in an abstract manner. Sottsass’s work often layered historical references and fused together the old and the new. The bold expression of the overall form, bright color, and contrasting combination of different materials are in keeping with Sottsass’s design aesthetic. Produced in the last few years of his life, this centerpiece shows the steady persistence of Sottsass’s particular design philosophy and visual language across media throughout his career.
