Model 900 Tea Wagon Tea Wagon

This is a tea wagon. It was designed by Alvar Aalto and manufactured by Oy Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas AB and Artek. It is dated 1937. Its medium is birch, plywood, paint, wicker, ceramic tile. It is a part of the Product Design and Decorative Arts department.

In this tea cart, architect-designer Alvar Aalto brings together a variety of materials and forms to create a harmonious object that is both functional and representative of the best of modernist design. The spare form is pared down to its essential elements—a curvilinear bentwood frame that supports a square top lined with tiles. Oversized white wheels at the base provide a stark, curved counterpoint to the horizontal planes of the top.

An undulating chair formed from a bent and molded birch-faced, light chestnut-colored plywood seat, and a curvilinear, sand-colored bent birch frame. The wave-like seat panel starts with a back-curved head rest descending on an angled plane to the bottom of the spine before heading up to bend at the knee area and descend slightly at the calf. The seat is supported by a curved frame which stretches backwards to a cross bar and supports the back legs, forming a trapezoidal shape. The arms are formed from two undulating bent-birch strips which mirror the curves of the seat and are joined to the back legs.

A bent birch plywood arm chair designed by Alvar Aalto for the Paimio Sanitorium. A one-piece curved bent birch plywood scroll-shaped seat is suspended in its own frame composed of ribbon-like, curved, laminated bent birch elements which form sinuous legs/arms in a trapezium shape.
