A rectangular vanity case, positioned at an angle and viewed from above. The top surface is inlaid with a landscape scene in carved and tinted mother-of-pearl and hardstone, in iridescent white, soft browns, and accents of green, blue, and orange. A broad river spans the frame, with rounded red-brown mountains on the far bank beneath a clouded sky. At left, flat gold boats, one with a green sail, skim the rippling water. In the foreground at right are delicate gold trees with iridescent green-blue foliage. Two figures, one blue and white, the other orange, stand on the brown bank below the trees. The scene is bordered with glossy black enamel, boldy decorated with ribbed gold bands trimmed with lines of diamonds. Swirling gold cloud designs decorate the corners.

Vanity Case, Landscape

This is a Vanity Case.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Private Collection as part of Jeweled Splendors of the Art Deco Era: The Prince and Princess Sadruddin Aga Khan Collection.

It is dated ca. 1929. Its medium is carved hardstone, carved and tinted mother-of-pearl, enamel, gold, diamonds, platinum, mirrored plate glass.

It is credited Lent by Private Collection.

Vanity case. At the center of the case is a landscape image, featuring a short path, a gate, and several buildings. In the background lies a hill or mountain, at the top of which lies several buildings, including a tower. In each corner of the vanity case are series of purple, vertical rectangles, cascading from the corner of the case to the center, landscape image.
