A vanity case in a rectangular form with inverted corners covered in black enamel. A unique floral scene encrusted with a round faceted diamond trellis, set in white gold, intentionally broken in places in rectangular forms, dominates the front cover. Round faceted diamonds frame the design following the inverted corners with two diamond side handles and a black onyx at each end resembling a bullet. Six large chrysanthemums with two circular rows of petals adorn and overlap the trellis and each other. They are embellished with calibrated-cut cabochon pink-red rubies, purple amethysts, blue sapphires and an onyx bead in the center. Black onyx broken branches are combined with green faceted and curved cuts of emeralds that function as leaves and overlap the diamond trellis and frame in several places. The vanity case could easily fit into the palm of your hand. The photograph captures the object displaying the front and bottom with a cast shadow and reflection against a white surface and ground.

Vanity Case, Chrysanthemum

This is a Vanity Case.

This object is not part of the Cooper Hewitt's permanent collection. It was able to spend time at the museum on loan from Private Collection as part of Jeweled Splendors of the Art Deco Era: The Prince and Princess Sadruddin Aga Khan Collection.

It is dated ca. 1928. Its medium is calibré-cut rubies, amethysts, sapphires, onyx, diamonds, emeralds, black enamel, white gold, mirrored plate glass.

It is credited Lent by Private Collection.

This clock features a half-circle black onyx and white rock crystal dial atop a flat black onyx pedestal with four white rock crystal cushion feet. The center of the dial is black, with a translucent white carved design of swirling clouds with angular rays shooting out, like rays of light. Little wavy lines fan out around the black center, shaped to cup the numbers. The numbers are angular, shaped from glinting diamonds against the white border. From left to right, the dial is numbered 12, 1, 2, and so on, ending with 12 again on the right. A small arrow pointer is positioned between 3 and 4. The pedestal is a slab of highly reflective black onyx with sharp edges. Evenly spaced below the front edge are four ribbed, round feet in pinky-white rock crystal, like little cushions. Diamond notches above the feet make a sharp contrast to the black onyx.
