Owe'neh Bupingeh Preservation Project
This is a Project. It was architect: Atkin Olshin Schade Architects and collaborator: Ohkay Owingeh Advisors, Elders, Pueblo students and made for (as the client) Ohkay Owingeh Housing Authority. It is dated 2005–present.
The Owe’neh Bupingeh Preservation Project balances preservation with the functional renovation of dwellings in the spiritual center of the 700-year-old Ohkay Owingeh (Place of the Strong People) Pueblo, a complex of 60 connected adobe homes and plazas, permitting contemporary life and cultural traditions to coexist. Ohkay Owingeh Housing Authority partnered with Atkin Olshin Schade Architects, tribal elders forged innovative procedures honoring tradition, tribal youth surveyed the village, and oral histories and historical data helped established an authentic architectural vocabulary for the sustainable rehabilitation—starting with low-income tribal members.
